It’s not curry if it isn’t authentic and spicy.
Once again our lazy Sunday began with us in search of somewhere new to tickle our fancy. This time, however, I was the one craving spicy curry with an “oomph!” We stumbled upon Bombay Blu whilst walking along Durban North, and it appeared unpretentious and cosy, so we scurried in – It was a mixed experience somehow.
The interior was not too shabby with comfortable chairs and checkered tablecloths, and their menu appeared to have a wide variety of foods from Indian to Indian-Chinese. Our waitress seemed easy-going and we obviously assumed that she was familiar with the foods, so we asked for her opinion on the spiciest curry to have in a bunny. She suggested the Lamb Rogan Josh and we amicably agreed since we were not too familiar with the various lamb curries. She then realised that we could only have a plain lamb curry from the takeaway menu in the bunny, so we shrugged our shoulders and once again agreed. Five seconds later she was back, apologising for the lack of bunny bread. So we jumped back to the Lamb Rogan Josh (which she once again clarified, without batting an eyelid, was spicy) together with naan breads, and washed down with a chocolate milkshake and beer.

Our drinks arrived first, and my chocolate milkshake was not anything to holler about, but was easy on the taste buds with a definite chocolate flavour. It complimented its price of R 25. Our plates arrived just before our food, and with repugnance we had to return Yuven’s one to the kitchen because it was decorated with previous memories of someone else’s food. Although my plate and the cutlery appeared untainted by other diners’ foods, they were tarnished and dull as if they had been through a thousand uses and were ready to turn in their resignation letters.
The arrival of our food left Yuven and I turning to each other with confused looks plastered on our faces. The Lamb Rogan Josh was served in a little pot hoisted above a flame, but looked the complete opposite of the description in the menu – No sign of Kashmiri in sight. Tucking in, it looked and tasted like the gravy you would pour over a pie with a side of chips. Sure enough it was delicious and the lamb was tender, but it was not even remotely close to what we expected or were told it would taste like. Even the green chillies scattered in it were mild! Disappointment at R 82. The naan breads on the other hand were scrumptious and flaky and rather large at just R 10 each.

We would suggest Bombay Blu, albeit cautiously, to someone looking for great naan to enjoy with a mild curry in a home–like setting, but as usual that’s just in my opinion 🙂
