Shisa Nyama: To Burn Meat
I could hear my tummy roaring like a Kalahari lion, and Yuven instinctively spotted the distinct look on my face – I was “hangry”. The yearning for some good ol’ wors lounging on some caramelised onions and nestled in a soft bun coupled with fresh beers to crown our lazy Sunday afternoon found us roaming Umhlanga Rocks until we (finally) settled on 4320 Shisa Nyama.

4320 Shisa Nyama is situated along Ridge Road, Umhlanga Rocks and is a sight for the eyes. Before the entrance and along the outside seating area, you can find yourself lounging on their large, well-padded seats made of white wooden palettes transporting you to a scene on the beach. Entering is somewhat different – The inside has high ceilings and table settings to cater for crowds of any size. The furniture and décor itself offers a more sophisticated atmosphere – One in which you dress up a little fancier for. The feature wall is dotted with essential braai elements and African designs, and there is even a freezer stocked with different meats for you to take your pick!

Our waitress offered us a choice of seating, and we immediately shifted outside to enjoy the weather and lazy Sunday vibe. She didn’t stray too far and brought our drinks before we could even break a sweat. Our crisp beer flowed into glass beer mugs, and soon we were ready to tackle the food menu.

Yuven and I were already set on a Wors Roll, and Priyen had set his sights on a 4320 Philly Steak Roll. Our friendly waitress jotted down our orders, and within sufficient time they were delivered first to our hungry eyes and noses, after which they travelled down our throats. Our wors rolls were nestled on a bed of caramelised onions, cocooned in a soft roll, and topped with a delectable sauce along with a side of fries. With much anticipation we sank our teeth in – It was delish! The wors was thick and juicy, and its saltiness complemented the sweet taste of the onions and sauce. Our only complaint would be the type of margarine lathered on the rolls since it wasn’t very pleasant on the palette. The chips were crispy on the outside and light on the inside – Perfect for stuffing into your mouth with a piece of wors, and making the entire meal completely acceptable at just R 45.

Priyen’s steak roll was brimming with fillings – Mushrooms, onions, cheeses, and sauces plus the addition of a side of fries, which definitely matched its long name and price of R 60. It was quite difficult to keep up a conversation with our mouths so full, so we just leaned back and enjoyed Durban’s unbeatable weather. Our waitress was always within sight so there was hardly any waiting on our part.

4320 Shisa Nyama most definitely can handle a crowd of people, however their unisex bathroom doesn’t sit too well with me – Personal preference I guess. But we would suggest this fabulous spot to:
- A group of friends looking for somewhere to chill and devour easy food
- Someone celebrating a birthday or special occasion
- Couples in search of a laid-back date
But as usual that’s just in my opinion 🙂
